Development Manager

Washington DC

The Literacy Lab is seeking a strategic, collaborative Development Manager to support the continued growth of a child-serving education nonprofit. The Development Manager will lead the organization’s development efforts to help close the literacy gap in several high-need regions across the country. Responsibilities include identifying, stewarding, and growing private and public partnerships to help meet strategic organizational goals. The Development Manager will work with team members across The Literacy Lab to identify new opportunities, develop compelling proposals, and keep supporters closely connected with the organization’s work. This position is an excellent opportunity to join an entrepreneurial, fast-moving team at a high-performing nonprofit dedicated to closing the literacy achievement gap.

ABOUT THE LITERACY LAB: The Literacy Lab is a fast-paced, Washington, DC-based non-profit organization with a mission to provide low-income children with individualized reading instruction to improve their literacy skills, leading to greater success in school and increased opportunities in life. We partner with school districts to add capacity in high-need schools to close the literacy achievement gap for children before third grade.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Development Manager, who is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Co-Executive Directors, is responsible for the following:

  • Collaborating with the Co-Executive Directors to design and execute an annual development strategy to ensure generation of sufficient operating support and to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Developing, managing, and growing relationships with foundations, individuals, and government agencies.
  • Identifying and pursuing new opportunities and connections to promote The Literacy Lab’s mission and goals.
  • Providing management and oversight of grant writing process and team of grant writing consultants to ensure highest-quality proposals.
  • Collaborating with data and program teams to produce regular, compelling donor communications about the organization’s impact.
  • Being an effective and outgoing representative for The Literacy Lab at events, site visits, and in meetings.
  • Upholding high ethical standards in donor communications and relations and ensuring compliance with the standards of professional conduct for fundraising while doing the most with the least and being a careful steward of the organization’s resources.
  • As resources grow, building a high-performing development department.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking candidates with the following qualities:

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills; ability to produce compelling written materials.
  • Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances; comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic community in areas served by The Literacy Lab.
  • A track record of leadership, identifying opportunities, and relentlessly pursuing results.
  • Ability to manage projects with minimal direction, a growth mindset, and a can-do attitude.
  • An optimistic outlook and a deep commitment to the mission of The Literacy Lab.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010 (or later) software, especially Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in grant writing, development, fundraising, or related work in the nonprofit field.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (at minimum)
