Senior Coordinator, Government Relations

Washington DC


The Senior Coordinator of Government Relations will provide support to Save the Children Action Network (SCAN)’s government relations team. He/she will work with the Senior Director of Government Relations to ensure strong coordination between those two departments and the rest of SCAN, as well as Save the Children’s Public Policy and Advocacy (PPA) and U.S. Programs and Advocacy (USPA) divisions.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Accountable for day to day execution of job. Organize self and manage time to accomplish specific tasks. May exercise independent judgment and discretion on operational matters related to specific tasks. Require supervision to review work progress and results. Keep manager informed of important issues. Build effective relationships within their immediate or peer workgroup.

  • Support the execution of policy and lobbying goals for the early childhood education (ECE) campaign at local, state, and federal levels. (45%)
  • Develop policy-related materials for external and internal use, including researching, editing and formatting presentations, memos and other documents.
  • Serve as project manager for high-priority initiatives. Conduct research on local laws, policies, and demographics; schedule and track meetings with local officials and other community leaders; prepare materials for meetings (one-pagers, presentations, etc.).
  • Plan briefings and other events on Capitol Hill and in state capitals. Coordinate logistics, prepare materials, and ensure prompt follow-up.
  • Serve as coordinator for Government Relations Committee for Advocacy Summit.
  • Maintain internal systems to track meetings and interactions with local, state, and federal government officials.
  • Support the execution of policy and lobbying goals for the federal maternal, newborn and child survival (MNCS) campaign. (25%)
  • Develop policy-related materials for external and internal use, including researching, editing and formatting presentations, memos and other documents.
  • Support MNCS coalition, a diverse group of 50 organizations focused on promoting U.S. leaderships on maternal and child health, and its four subcommittees.
  1. Schedule meetings, prepare invitations, take minutes, track action items, and draft thank-you notes.
  2. Track activities of each coalition member and work with Senior Director to ensure that all activities are coordinated.
  • Plan briefings on Capitol Hill and other events related to the campaign. Coordinate logistics, prepare materials, and ensure prompt follow-up.
  • Serve as coordinator for Government Relations Committee for Advocacy Summit.
  • Maintain internal systems to track meetings and interactions with U.S. government officials.
  • Support operations of government relations team. (25%)
  • Keep internal shared drives and hard copy files of written policy materials up to date.
  • Schedule meetings, take minutes, and track action items for team meetings.
  • Manage SCAN intern.
  • Serve as finance point-person for government relations and policy teams. Properly code and submit invoices and expense reports.
  • Provide other support as support as requested.
  • Serve as SCAN point-person for lobbying reporting. (5%)
  • Work with Legal and Finance Departments to track and report lobbying expenditures, including timesheets and expense reports.
  • Support systems to ensure timely and accurate submission of local and state lobbying reports.
  • Work with Legal to monitor lobbying rules in SCAN target states and ensure any changes are communicated to SCAN team.

Required Qualifications

  • You have a minimum 3-4 years' experience in area of expertise
  • Excellent communications skills;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Team player in fast-paced environment;
  • Strong research and analytical skills, able to use internet search engines and Congressional/government websites;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Good sense of humor and ability to adapt in rapidly changing environment.
  • High School or Technical/Vocational Degree
  • You have learned knowledge and technical skills to support semi-complex tasks
