Director of Government Relations

The Director of Government Relations is Food Bank For New York City’s primary liaison with New York City’s elected representatives and staff, and oversees the organization’s engagement in public policy- and issue-based campaigns. The purpose of this job is to develop and implement government relations strategies relating to issues of interest to Food Bank, particularly regarding support for city, state and federal emergency food programs; access to benefits, including government nutrition and income support programs; nutrition education and financial empowerment; and access to affordable, nutritious food in all New York City communities. The Director of Government Relations will work closely with Food Bank staff and members to develop policy positions and publications, as well as to engage legislators, government offices and the larger hunger and poverty communities to promote solutions to hunger. Working within a fast-paced environment, this position requires a self-motivated individual with a solid understanding of and interest in hunger and poverty issues, and with substantial experience in New York City government relations and working and communicating with a variety of audiences.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as Food Bank’s primary liaison to New York City’s elected representatives and their staff, to steward relationships and resources in fulfillment of a mission that serves nearly 1.5 million New York City residents.
  • Monitor, identify and analyze legislative & policy issues and trends that impact the work of Food Bank.
  • Develop Food Bank’s legislative positions and advocacy strategies, in coordination with Food Bank members, state and national partner organizations and senior staff.
  • Create materials on legislative, policy and budget priorities for various audiences, including elected officials, foundations, corporate and individual donors, as well as the general public.
  • Devise strategies and collaborate with relevant staff to engage Food Bank’s network of emergency food programs, CBOs and schools in policy-related work, including forums, campaigns and advocacy projects.
  • Collaborate with external organizations and public offices, and lead, facilitate and/or participate in committees and planning groups as required.
  • Conduct public presentations and disseminate information regarding food poverty to inform city, state and national policy efforts.
  • Serve as an organizational expert on policies, procedures and regulations of relevant government programs.
  • Recommend report topics and participate in teams that produce policy publications.
  • Review communications and marketing materials to ensure accurate reporting of policy-related information, and implement measures to maintain historical continuity/institutional memory.
  • Meet relevant performance metrics and benchmarks;
  • Train, supervise and develop any assigned staff; and
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in a relevant field preferred; BA/BS required;
  • Minimum of five years progressively responsible work experience in government relations or public policy-related work, preferably in the areas of hunger or poverty;
  • Excellent oral and written advocacy, public speaking, and analytical skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking, the ability to convey complex information in a clear, culturally competent and understandable manner;
  • Experience analyzing complex policy problems, and developing policy and advocacy positions and strategies;
  • A demonstrated capacity to work with policy makers and community organizations, to think strategically and to work with external colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to balance competing priorities, work collaboratively with colleagues and a demonstrated aptitude for project management;
  • Proficiency in all MS office applications (including Excel and Access).
