Communications Manager

Washington DC


The Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Communications Manager. The Communications Manager is a critical position on the Marketing-Communications (MarCom) team, and within the organization, focused on raising the strategic communications profile, productivity and effectiveness for SEPA. The Communications Manager’s primary mission is to develop and publicize compelling narratives about the role of SEPA and its members in the U.S. energy transition.

Responsibilities and Key Impact Areas

  • Monitors industry news to ensure SEPA is current on key issues and shares appropriate content with members and stakeholders.
  • Identifies new outlets for produced content.
  • Researches, writes and edits materials to promote membership engagement and advance the organization’s strategic goals. Deliverables include, but are not limited to, articles, reports, briefs, fact sheets, op-eds, blogs, other online copy, multimedia story-telling, social media, and conference presentations.
  • Ensures communications strategy is a key element in the planning of all SEPA content and events.
  • Develops and executes tailored media plans for key audiences and targeted media. Conducts ongoing analysis of outcomes. Specific campaigns include:
    • SEPA’s annual Utility Market Snapshot series
    • North America Smart Energy Week and regional Solar Power events
    • Grid Evolution Summit
    • Other reports and content pathways
  • Acts as main point of contact for media strategy and relations
    • Responds to reporters’ requests for information and interviews
    • Drafts comments and content, such as op-eds for C-suite in response to breaking news and key industry trends.
    • Develops talking points and prepare staff for media interviews
    • Follows up with reporters to build relationships
  • Manages communications and media planning for SEPA Top 10 and SEPA Power Player awards, identifies the most compelling stories to amplify via SEPA blog and social media, and to pitch to media.
  • Oversees weekly production of the SEPAPower blog, including working with guest authors (membership engagement) and SEPA employees.
  • Develops and writes fresh and substantive articles. Follows up with proactive pitching for reprints in industry media.
  • Oversees and develops strategy for all of SEPA’s social media channels, including execution of spot social media posts on news stories and press releases highlighting members’ achievements and activities.
  • Responsible for leading the creation of post-event content and content repurposing plans.
  • Maintains high content quality and clarity through developmental content.
  • Responsible for copy editing for a range of research publications and other collateral.
  • Works with contractors and consultants in public relations, writing, graphic design and video production.
  • Oversees senior communications associate position, which includes daily operation of SEPA’s social media channels, data tracking and analysis, and blog editing and posting.
  • Serves as project manager for editorial calendar, including the weekly SEPAPower blog, big weekly newsletter and all media outreach for SEPA publications and events.
  • Manages and maintains library of SEPA presentations, issue briefs, fact sheets, photos, charts and graphics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree, plus a minimum of five years’ experience in a writing or editing position in journalism or public relations.
  • Experience in working with reporters and editors in specialized industry and mainstream media and across print, social and multimedia channels.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and Google suite skills.
  • Passion for clean energy issues and SEPA’s mission; prior knowledge or work related to clean energy technologies, environmental issues or electric utilities is a plus.
  • Experience with media relations, social media, graphics, web production and research.
