Research Assistant

Washington DC

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), a leading national research organization based in Washington, DC, seeks a qualified research assistant for its Transportation Program.  ACEEE is an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1980 that acts as a catalyst to advance energy efficiency policies, programs, technologies, investments, and behaviors.

Position Description:

ACEEE seeks a research assistant to support the research, analytical, and data collection needs of the transportation team on a range of policy-related and technical research projects. The research assistant will also make significant contributions to ACEEE’s international research. This is an exciting position for someone looking to have real world impact on policies that improve the efficiency of transportation systems and vehicles as well as explore best practice energy efficiency policies and programs globally.

The research assistant will have a variety of research opportunities working with a well-respected and widely recognized team of transportation efficiency experts and collaborating closely with other programs across the organization. The core responsibilities of the position include:

  • Working with senior transportation researchers, lead transportation research efforts on best practice policies and programs at the state and local level for ACEEE’s suite of energy efficiency and clean energy scorecards  
  • Co-author, collect data for, and help coordinate research for the International Energy Efficiency Scorecard and the biennial International Symposium
  • Assist with transportation and climate-related state and local policy technical assistance efforts
  • Assist the transportation team with research on topics such as fuel economy standards, passenger and freight mobility, and electric and automated vehicles
  • Help to build out new areas of focus within the transportation program such as transportation equity
  • Provide administrative support to transportation team

The analyst will work on projects of high visibility in the energy efficiency, technology, and policy communities. The position offers unmatched access to national experts in energy efficiency, as well as an opportunity to develop expertise and leadership on transportation energy efficiency topics.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

  • Highly detail-oriented. The research assistant will conduct rigorous and peer-reviewed primary research dealing with both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Strong analytical skills. The research assistant will be tasked with analyzing data using both qualitative and quantitative methods using Excel and other analysis tools.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. The analyst is expected to produce detailed research reports, white papers, and fact sheets, and to present research results through formal presentations, webinars, and blog posts.
  • Superb organizational and project coordination skills. The position requires coordinating complex, long-term projects with oversight and conducting research as part of a team. The research assistant must also demonstrate superior deadline management capabilities as they juggle multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. He/she will coordinate and collaborate with numerous ACEEE staff members on cross-cutting research projects. The research assistant must also maintain relationships with external stakeholders to inform research. Candidates should be articulate and thoughtful in their communications.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter. The analyst must be able to work independently and take problem-solving initiative to answer complex research questions.
  • Tech-savvy and quick learner. The analyst will need to be able to pick up analytical tools and programming languages quickly in addition to subject matter familiarity in consultation with other ACEEE staff.



  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Rigorous coursework in transportation policy, public policy analysis, environmental studies, urban planning, energy policy, and/or economics
  • Interest in transportation issues as they relate to energy and climate
  • Interest in international energy and climate policy
  • Ability to juggle a broad range of responsibilities and fast-moving projects
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative

Preferred start date: on or about October 1, 2019, based in Washington, DC  

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes ACEEE’s generous benefits package which includes: health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan; transportation and bike share benefits; and three weeks of vacation in the first year and four weeks thereafter.
