Senior Director of Strategic Communications

Washington DC

Malaria No More (MNM) envisions a world where no one dies of a mosquito bite. Almost 15 years into our mission, our work has contributed to historic progress toward this goal. Now, we are mobilizing the political commitment, funding, and innovation required to achieve what would be one of the greatest humanitarian accomplishments—ending malaria within our generation. MNM is a global organization with offices in Seattle, Washington, D.C., and India as well as two affiliate organizations in London and Tokyo. Each office fosters an inclusive, close-knit environment with provided snacks, team gatherings for birthdays, and other fun traditions.

Location: Washington, DC preferred. Willing to consider exceptional candidates outside of preferred location for remote work.

Position Overview

The Director of Communications is a dynamic, outcomes-driven leader responsible for the design and implementation of Malaria No More’s domestic and global communications strategy to advance our objectives. The Director brings strategic planning and a track record of content innovation to the organization while guiding a team of communications professionals. This individual has experience building a communications department, building internal relationships to further the programmatic work, mobilizing a network of partner organizations, engaging top-tier media, and reporters, and using strategic communications and storytelling to drive an organization’s mission, brand, campaigns, and work. A key part of this role will be to leverage the collective expertise of our cross-departmental team, as well as a range of external stakeholders, advisors, and partners. The Director will have a strong understanding of D.C.-based national and global media and possess established media relationships when they walk through the door.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

·        Create and execute a comprehensive communications strategy and evolving messaging that includes traditional media, digital media (web, email, social media), statements, speeches, thought-leader events, and other creative content.

·        Develop a strategy for, and oversee content creation and execution, covering organization-wide needs and campaign- and program-specific needs. To include assisting and developing reports, briefing memos, one-pagers, infographics, video, social media assets and talking points for internal and external organizational communications.

·        Elevate the malaria and global health narrative in Washington, DC, across the United States, and global media.

·        Oversee publication production, including design, layout, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines, organizational branding, and budget requirements.

·        Work in partnership to support the Strategic Initiatives team and organizational fundraising goals.

·        Secure speaking engagements for Leadership Team & others in the organization to strategically increase awareness of the organization’s mission.

·        Liaise with U.S. Government and partner communications staff, to provide regular updates on that state of progress to end malaria and critical role USG investments play.

·        Support the advocacy efforts around the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and advocacy partner efforts to tell the story of USG investments in the malaria fight and the critical importance of the malaria infrastructure for combatting other infectious diseases and pandemics, showcasing success at regional and global levels, and the overarching global health security narrative.

·        Work with graphic designer to produce visual assets and other content for MNM projects (malaria and gender, innovative finance, India and Africa programs, climate change, etc.), development campaigns, branding, and global partner campaigns.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

·        BA required, MA preferred, in related field such as communications, public policy, international relations, political science. 

·        10+ years’ work experience in a dynamic strategic communications role, ideally in a development institution, dynamic foundation, government, or non-government institutions, with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership.

·        Excellent and persuasive writing and communication skills.

·        Experience in health care, public health, or other national issues preferred, ideally on health care, political, or relevant issue campaigns.

·        Collaborative, innovative thinker with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans, outputs, and results.

·        Track record of using strategic communications to drive advocacy, brand, products, and narratives.

·        Proven ability to engage with grasstops and/or grassroots storytellers to amplify a message.

·        Proven action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to leadership, preferably including experience in a start-up environment.

·        Proven ability to develop, inspire, and manage a diverse team of professionals.

·        Strong commitment to MNM’s mission to end malaria.

·        Dedication to operating in a diverse, inclusive, learning atmosphere exploring multiple policy solutions to achieve that mission.

MNM offers a competitive compensation package based upon previous experience. This is a full-time, exempt role and is eligible for MNM’s comprehensive benefits package, including high-quality medical/dental/vision coverage, 20 vacation days, 10 sick days, 14 paid holidays, summer Friday flex time and paid parental leave, medical/dependent care/commuter FSAs, short- and long-term disability and life insurance, and a 401K plan with an employer safe harbor contribution.
